Background
On July 4, 2026, America turns 250 years old. Federal institutions, major media outlets, federal government agencies, and civic organizations are already shaping how the “American” story will be told. Based on what we have witnessed in recent years—book bans and DEI erasure, whitewashed history curricula and defunding of public libraries, truth stripped from public archives and immigrant voices and bodies silenced—we have every reason to believe the “official” America 250 narrative will be sanitized, incomplete, and dangerous in its omissions.
We are building local and national partnerships to refute and refuse that narrative.
#WeTheCivic:America 250: The Movement
#WeTheCivic: America 250 is a national narrative intervention and infrastructure dedicated to
- Putting diverse multiracial nonprofit and civil society voices at the center of how America tells its 250-year story
- Celebrating and amplifying the stories of nonprofit and civic workers, voices, and journalism doing the daily work to advance a thriving, inclusive democracy.
Because democracy's unfinished work requires our narratives, our stories, and our communities.
#WeTheCivic:America 250: The Partners
#WeTheCivic partners include nonprofit organizations, civic partners, independent newsrooms, and narrative power-builders committed to telling the true stories of how multiracial nonprofit and civil society communities and leaders have led these last 250 years of fighting for a true, vibrant democracy for all.
#WeTheCivic partners announcements began in May 2026, and will continue across 2026.
WHAT EVERY PARTNER CAN COUNT ON
We want every #WeTheCivic partner to have resources and increased visibility this “America 250” Year. All #WeTheCivic partners receive:
- Custom social assets with your organization’s logo and #WeTheCivic: America 250 branding
- A public announcement welcoming you to the coalition
- Named recognition in press materials, campaign announcements, and funder reports
- Distribution and amplification of your events, storytelling, and reporting across digital and social channels
The only asks of partners:
- Share #WeTheCivic values
- Tell your people about the #WeTheCivic call for stories
- Share at least one #WeTheCivic story this season. Help distribute the real stories of the workers and leaders advancing multiracial democracy
- And for publishing partners: Join in coordinated or collaborative posting when relevant
HOW YOU WANT TO PARTICIPATE IS UP TO YOU
Community Partners: For nonprofits, advocacy organizations, funders, and networks
You don't need a newsroom to be part of this movement. Community partners help move campaign stories through their networks—sharing the call for pitches, amplifying published work, and showing up in coordinated moments when it matters.
Publishing Partners For newsrooms, media organizations, freelance creators, journalists, narrative organizations
There are two ways to publish with us:
- Co-Publish — You produce original reporting or creative work; we publish or co-publish it together. Your logo is on the graphics. We promote it jointly.
- Republish — You have relevant work already published; we bring it to a new national and nonprofit audience. Stories are credited to you in every caption and post.
