Board Management Workshop

Is Your Board Structured for Impact?

Thursday, October 12, 2017 at 2-3pm EST

Over many decades, the nonprofit sector has been besieged with advice on their board structures—and too much of this has been based on false precepts about what ideal nonprofit boards should look and act like. This has led to a great deal of board underperformance and even outright dysfunction. As a result, nonprofits are becoming increasingly thoughtful about how form fits function and intent in these important bodies. This allows us all to consider and tailor board design more consciously, but to do this, we need to understand structural design principles.

There are some real insights in BoardSource’s 2017 study “Leading with Intent” about what is happening in the structures of boards and what effect that is having. Among other things, you will find out:

  • If board size is changing
  • If the use of standing committees is changing and how
  • What kinds of boards are meeting on what kinds of schedules
  • What matters to board members and executives in board management and behavior

…And much more.

This conversation will not only dive into these practical questions, but will get to some of the rationales behind these board trends. While there is no “magic” size or “cookie-cutter” structure to meet every board’s needs, participants will learn about the factors you should consider to determine the ideal size and structure for your board to advance your organization’s mission.

Join this webinar with Anne Wallestad, BoardSource’s CEO, and Vernetta Walker, BoardSource’s Chief Governance Officer and Vice President of Programs, and special guest Dr. David Renz, Director of the Midwest Center for Nonprofit Leadership at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
